The Financial Crisis Status of Bakersfield, CA

I work for the County at the hospital, and my husband is an independent contractor of FedEx Home Delivery. We are empty-nesters, we own our home (us & the mortgage conglomerate), we have a few toys, we eat out a lot, we help our kids when needed, and we both have hobbies. Overall we contribute our generous share to the local economy, as well as to internet businesses from whom we purchase electronics, clothing, vehicle accessories & parts, etc. etc. I think we are pretty "normal" in the level of our consumption. Our County government is in the midst of struggling over cash short-fall and how many people will have to be laid off. All the unique buzz words related to governmental accounting vagaries have been tossed around and explained and explained again. It seems like the powers that be are not very interested in letting anyone know for sure just how much money they have squirreled away in several different "funds" and "endowments". Some people are starting to be very cautious about how much money they spend, and have put vacation planning on hold until questions are answered and decisions are made. The TV news is full of bad news of layoffs and cutbacks.

However..................the supermarkets are full of people pushing heavily laden baskets..............the local restaurants still have wait lists......................and the Mall parking lot is FULL. The two concepts are not compatible..............so where is the truth??????????
